The race for the playoffs is heating up and so is the tempers in the toughest division.
The Yankees clawed out a 4-2 win over the BlueJays on Sunday afternoon, but not before tensions boiled over in the fifth when Yankees All-Star Judge was hit by a pitch.
Manoah explained after the game that he had been struggling with his throwing motion. It hit Judge. I told him I wasn't trying to do that.
Manoah's pitch hit Judge on the shoulder, the same spot in which he had barely missed earlier in the game. Judge yelled at Manoah as he walked to the mound.
Manoah said that the judge looked at him and said "That's two" I threw one up there in the first baseman's box. I'm trying to minimize base runners. I told him I didn't want to do that.
After Judge waved them off, several teammates, including starting pitcher Cole, came out of the dugout. Judge went to first base after the game was stopped. Manoah appeared to help diffuse the situation by talking to the judge.
Manoah told Judge that it was trouble with his command, but there was no love lost for Cole.
I believe the judge understood that. Manoah said that if Gerrit wanted to do something, he could walk past the logo of the luxury car brand on the grass next time.
Cole was vague when asked if it was Manoah or if he intended to hit Judge.
Cole gave up four earned runs over six frames in the Yankees' loss to the Blue Jay. I don't like a lot ofbatters hit by pitch. I'm not sure what to say.
Cole's reaction to Manoah's pitch was defended by the manager.
He doesn't like our guy being drilled. If it's not intentional, we can get caught up in it. Sometimes we don't agree with that. It gets your attention when your dude gets hit. I think the judge did a good job. I thought he was supporting our guy. Two division rivals are playing for a lot of time and not much else.
The judge said that the incident was an emotional part of the competition.
It's the hottest time of the day. Judge said nobody like to get hit. Everyone is interested in the game. Everyone will take exception to someone getting hit. You move on after Dugout had a few things to say.
Judge said that he and Manoah would keep it between them.
With the Yankees having lost 14 of their previous 17 games and looking to avoid a sweep, Judge stated his focus was clear.
I didn't need anyone else to get thrown out for me because I was going to get hit. Judge moved on to the next play. I know Anthony was behind me at the time. We should get a couple of runs instead of fighting. We were able to take care of business and move on.
