  • Amazon has patched a security vulnerability in Ring's Android app.
  • The security flaw could have allowed bad actors to access users' video footage by installing a malicious app on the same device.
  • Amazon said that it had found no evidence of the vulnerability being exploited in the wild.

A new report may show that Ring doorbell cameras aren't the most secure home devices available.

Checkmarx discovered a vulnerability in Ring's companion app for phones after analyzing it. There were several bugs in the app that could allow other apps on the same device access to it. These may be malicious applications that trick users into installing them.

It could have given bad actors access to users' video footage stored in a Ring video doorbell. The user data could have been exposed. More than 10 million people have downloaded the app.

The security vendor was told by Amazon that it would be hard for anyone to exploit the vulnerability.

The security flaw was fixed by Amazon after Checkmarx reported it. Customer data was not exposed to malicious actors.

Ring figured in a security issue. Amazon employees were able to view video footage with access levels that went beyond what their job required. 11 clips were released to law enforcement without user consent this year.
