One of the best years for video games was in 2007. Call of Duty blew the world open, Nintendo took Super Mario to the galaxy, and Microsoft's Crackdown was a hit. As of today, 2K Games' Bioshock is 15 years old, but at the time it was one of the top games in the world.

Ken Levine is the director and writer of BioShock, a first-person shooter set in the 1960s. The underwater city of Rapture was built as a haven for the elites of society by its creator, Andrew Ryan. Everything went to hell after a substance called ADAM was discovered.

Everyone in the city was given powers through the use ofPlasmids. On the other side, Ryan commanded his Big Daddies to protect Little Sisters as they took ADAM from dead bodies. Atlas, the man who convinced the poor citizens of Rapture to rise up against Ryan, was on the other side of the equation.

The atmosphere and narrative of BioShock, which incorporated ideas from George Orwell and Ayn Rand, was praised in its original state. By the end of its debut month, it had sold 485,000 copies and had sold 4 million across all systems. In 2008 and 2009, it was made available on the PS3 and Mac.

There was a time when the industry was affected by BioShock mania. One of the best games of all time was included in the exhibit devoted to the art of video games. Along with the original Mass Effect and 2008's Braid, the game has been used as an example of the merits of video games. 2010's BioShock 2 from 2K Marin was a direct sequel that allowed players to control a Big Daddy a decade after the original game and search for his missing little sister. Infinite by the returning Irrational starred a private eye who tried to get Elizabeth Comstock out of Columbia in 1912. The expansion "Burial at Sea" linked it with the story of the original game, even though both games received narrative DLC.

There have been attempts to duplicate the narrative highs of the first game since BioShock went quiet. It can be seen in games like The Last of Us, Machine Games, and Arkane's Prey or Dishonored. Infinite was released a few months before the original Last of Us. Cyberpunk 2077, which features better combat and sim elements than BioShock, has a part in the period piece shooter. It's possible that something like Disco Elysium has been influenced by it.

It exists for the franchise itself. Due to development issues that plague the entire franchise, it feels more of an idea than reality, despite the fact that a fourth entry is in the works. Ken Levine has not released a game in the past nine years. Fans have been left to replay the old games and discuss how time has treated the sequels. It remains to be seen if the streamer will be able to make a movie out of the first game in the series. What can it bring to the table that the original trilogy didn't already cover?
