The design of Ford's F-250 pickup truck caused the deaths of two people.
According to The Wall Street Journal, an attorney for the plaintiffs told them that a jury in Georgia ruled on Friday that Ford should pay damages for selling trucks that were too weak to roll over.
The case was brought against Ford by the family of Voncile Hill and her husband, who were killed when the right front tire on their truck blew out.
The Hill family is happy the case is over. They are going to make Ford pay.
According to Gerald Davidson, a lawyer for the Hill family, the jury had apportioned 70% of the blame for the Hills' deaths to Ford.
He said that they were happy for the Hill family and for the advancement of car safety.
The punitive damages ruling is very large. 75% of the damages must be paid to the state of Georgia according to Georgia law.
The Journal was told by a Ford spokesman that the company would appeal the ruling.
We don't believe the verdict is supported by the evidence and we plan to appeal.
Over 49,000 cars could have been affected by a safety defect in Ford's Mach-E SUV.
The Journal analyzed data from the Department of Transportation and found that the automaker has more cars affected by recalls than it produces.
Ford didn't reply immediately.
