Middleweight: Paulo Costa (14-2, 6-2 UFC) def. Luke Rockhold (16-6, 6-5 UFC) by unanimous decision (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Two of the best middleweights in the world, as well as two of the best middleweights in need of a win, were going into Saturday's fight. It was Costa who did it.

Costa out-lasted Rockhold over the course of a three-round affair at UFC 281 on Saturday, collecting unanimous judges' scores of 30-26. Rockhold was forced to breathe out of his mouth due to blood pouring from his nose early on in the fight, as he put his hands on his hips multiple times.

Costa was coming off back-to-back losses to Israel Adesanya and Marvin Vettori and it was important for him to get a win.

It looked like it was the end of the road for Rockhold. He announced his retirement after returning from a three-year layoff. He nodded in agreement when Joe Rogan mentioned the possibility of it being his last fight, even though he didn't say he was done.

Rockhold said that he couldn't do this anymore. I did everything I could to make it happen. I'm getting older.

Costa got off to a great start when he defended Rockhold's initial attempts to take him down. He landed several hard hammerfists after stuffing one of the first attempts, which caused swelling on Rockhold's face and bloodied his nose. He walked Rockhold to the fence and threw combinations on his feet.

Rockhold's body language was bad by the end of the first round. He leaned heavily on the fence between the first and second rounds and looked for a resting spot. Costa accidentally hit him below the belt in the second round, which gave him a rest. Rockhold kept breathing heavily even after the break.

This fight is madness #UFC278

— Arnold billy allen (@Arnoldbfa) August 21, 2022

Costa landed over 100 strikes for Rockhold.

Even though he was clearly exhausted, Rockhold still threw dangerous shots in the third. He reversed his stance at the end of the fight and finished the round on top. The blood came from Rockhold's nose as he rubbed Costa's face.

Costa has expressed an interest in boxing in the future despite the two losses.

Men's bantamweight: Merab Dvalishvili (15-4, 8-2 UFC) def. Jose Aldo (31-8, 13-7 UFC) by unanimous decision (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

In his previous UFC fights, Dvalishvili had landed five or more takedowns. In three of the bouts, he hit double figures. It was obvious why he is called "The Machine."

He went 0 for 16 on Aldo's attempts to take him down. Is it Dvalishvili's fault? It wasn't.

Dvalishvili and the champion are tied for the best in the bantamweight division. Dvalishvili doesn't want to fight Aljamain Sterling, his training partner on Long Island, New York. He is Dvalishvili's brother.

Aldo is a 35-year-old former champ from Brazil. Aldo received a standing applause during his introduction and a standing applause during his walk out. A three-fight winning streak ended for him. He was respected by Dvalishvili along the way.

The man was very technical against the cage. I usually take down everyone.

Women's bantamweight: Lucie Pudilová (14-7, 3-5 UFC) def. Wu Yanan (12-6, 1-5 UFC) by second-round TKO (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Lucie Pudilova, left, earned her third win in the UFC with a TKO finish of Wu Yanan on Saturday. Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC

She was a brawler in her first fight. She is much more versatile this time around.

Pudilova, who is now training at SBG Ireland under coach John Kavanagh, took Wu down, got her back, moved to mount, and along the way hammered down with big punches and elbows. The fight had to be stopped by the referee.

Pudilova is back in the UFC.

In the first round, Pudilova had a lot of success on the ground. Pudilova got an arm-and-head throw in the second round and started firing off violent elbows from top position, finishing the fight. There was no answer from the man.

Aye now that's some violence

— Jamahal Hill (@JamahalH) August 21, 2022

Pudilova was released by the UFC in 2020. The Czech Republic native lost four times before being cut, but two of them were Fight of the Night performances.

A 26 year old from China is fighting out of New Mexico.

Light heavyweight: Tyson Pedro (9-3, 5-3 UFC) def. Harry Hunsucker (7-6, 0-3 UFC) by first-round TKO (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Pedro was thought to be a very promising prospect at 205 pounds. The sentiment has come back.

After returning to health this year, the Australian has recorded back-to-back finishes against two different opponents.

It took 65 seconds for the fight to end. He hit Hunsucker with a jab. Pedro smiled and pointed at Hunsucker after he landed the shot. He kicked him in the midsection and finished the fight with punches on the ground.

Beautiful work @tyson_pedro_ 👏#UFC278

— Alex Volkanovski (@alexvolkanovski) August 21, 2022

Pedro said that it was a very hard camp. It's all about getting it done quickly. I don't fight in front of fans for four years, so I need to do something. Let me hear something

Pedro was an 8-to-1 favorite to win over Hunsucker. In the UFC, he improves to a.500 record. He lost against Ovince St-Preux and Mauricio 'Shogun' Rua.

Heavyweight: Marcin Tybura (23-7, 10-6 UFC) def. Alexandr Romanov (16-1, 5-1 UFC) by majority decision (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

If you watched the first round of the fight, you would think that Romanov wouldn't leave the UFC without a perfect record. He mauled Tybura on the canvas for the entire first five minutes after taking down him.

When Tybura came out for Round 2, he took over against a tired Romanov. Tybura won the second and third rounds and was rewarded with a majority decision with two judges scoring it 29-28 in his favor and the third scorecard reading 28-28 because of a 10-8 first round for Romanov.

A 36-year-old from Poland named Tybura has won six of his last seven fights after putting his opponent in trouble with a second-round takedown and then peppering him with punches in the third round. Tybura's experience against higher-level opposition allowed him to pace himself and remain fresh in the 4,300-foot altitude of Salt Lake City.

Romanov was a force in the first round, but didn't fare as well after that. He had only been past the halfway point of Round 3 three times in his career. He didn't have anything in reserve when his gas tank emptied.

Lightweight: Jared Gordon (19-5, 7-4 UFC) def. Leonardo Santos (18-7-1, 7-3-1 UFC) by unanimous decision (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Jared Gordon, left, defeated Leonardo Santos by unanimous decision at UFC 278 on Saturday. Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC

Salt Lake City has an elevation of 4,226 feet. Gordon invested in the body and the gas tank and it paid off.

It was one of the most one-sided victories of Gordon's career. Gordon's cardio held the whole way and he was able to pepper Santos with combinations in every round.

In the first round,Santos had a nose bleed and a cut under his eye. Gordon was never able to get to the ground in a dominant position despite the best efforts of Santos. By the third round, Gordon was getting inSantos' face and he was tired.

Gordon has won four in a row. The New York native is a member of the UFC. The man fighting out of Brazil's Nova Uniao camp is 42 years old.

Men's featherweight: Sean Woodson (9-1-1, 3-1-1 UFC) and Luis Saldaña (16-7-1, 2-1-1 UFC) results in a split draw (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

play

The referee deducts a point from Luis Saldana in the first round after he thought he had won the fight.

In an upset victory over Woodson, Saldaa blew several chances to cash in.

Woodson was dropped by a clean left hook from Saldaa in the first round. Rather than follow him to the floor and look for a finish, Saldaa walked away and allowed Woodson to get up, even though Woodson looked very unstable.

He was dropped with a straight left moments later. Saldaa didn't follow him to the floor. As Woodson sat up, Saldaa hit him with a blatantly illegal knee to the head and the referee docked him a point.

Woodson did a bit more in the rest of the bout. He used a triangle choke in the second round and jabd in the third to get the win. There was a split draw due to the point deduction. The scorecards were read by the judges.

Draws are garbage it means neither fighter gets their win money and it doesn't move their career forward so it's a huge waste of time and expense

— Terrance 'T Wrecks' McKinney (@twrecks155) August 21, 2022

Woodson is 3-1-1 in the UFC, while Saldaa is 2-1-1.

Welterweight: Ange Loosa (9-3, 1-1 UFC) def. AJ Fletcher (9-2, 0-2 UFC) by unanimous decision (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Round 3 was played out in slow motion, with Fletcher lying on his back and not doing much to try to get up. The fans booed until there was barely a minute left. The two fighters had delivered in the round before.

By the middle of the five minutes, Loosa had spent most of his time landing right hand after right hand to the face of Fletcher, who was bleeding profusely and wobbly. The high output appeared to tire Loosa, and the referee was close by in case he needed to jump in.

Both fighters had little to give at that point in the game. It was only by getting the fight back to the canvas at the start of the third round that the win was secured.

Yooooo this fight is insane !!! #UFC278

— Chris Weidman (@chrisweidman) August 21, 2022

He trains in South Florida. After dropping his UFC debut, he won for the first time.

The 25-year-old from Lafayette, Louisiana, has lost both of his UFC fights after coming to the promotion.

Men's flyweight: Amir Albazi (15-1, 3-0 UFC) def. Francisco Figueiredo (13-5-1, 2-2 UFC) by first-round submission (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Albazi is one of the top prospects at 125 pounds and he did nothing Saturday to change that.

Albazi dominated Figueiredo in the first round using his wrestling and grappling to get the win. Albazi locked in the choke on Figueiredo after landing two takedowns.

Albazi said that he is the best of a group of killers at flyweight. Albazi had not fought in over a year and a half. He has won four in a row, including three in the UFC.

Amir is a prrrroblem @AmirAlbazi

— Belal Muhammad (@bullyb170) August 20, 2022

The brother of a flyweight champ is 2-2 in the UFC.

Albazi stated that the king is back.

Men's bantamweight: Aoriqileng (20-9, 2-2 UFC) def. Jay Perrin (10-6, 0-2 UFC) by unanimous decision (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

The judge's scorecards showed that 'The Mongolian Murderer' held off a late rally by Perrin. The Salt Lake City crowd booed the decision but Perrin seemed to accept it and applauded Aoriqileng.

In the second and third rounds, Perrin's wrestling played a role.

The best action of the bout took place in the last 10 seconds, when Perrin walked Aoriqileng back to the fence. Afterwards, Aoriqileng said he wasn't hurt by the shots, but it was the best moment of his life.

Aoriqileng moved up from flyweight and is now 2-0 in the UFC. The Massachusetts town fell to 2-0.

Men's flyweight: Victor Altamirano (11-2, 1-1 UFC) def. Daniel Da Silva (11-4, 0-3 UFC) by first-round TKO (Watch this fight on ESPN+)

Victor Altamirano celebrates his win over Daniel Da Silva at UFC 278. Jeffrey Swinger-USA TODAY Sports

There were two fighters chasing their first UFC victory. Da Silva hit Altamirano with a right hand that dropped him in the first minute. But Altamirano got up and kept coming forward, and after a knee to the body put Da Silva on the canvas, theMexican swarmed with a flurry of elbows that finished the job at 3:39 of the first round.

He didn't win his UFC debut.

Da Silva looked like he was the sharper fighter at the beginning, knocking down his opponent and almost connecting with spinning attacks. He made the mistake of trying for submissions instead of defending against the elbows that caused a cut on his face and ended the fight. He has never won a UFC bout.
