According to an upcoming book, an associate of Rudy Giuliani tried to get Donald Trump to pardon the former New York City mayor.

Andrew Kirtzman's book "Giuliani: The Rise and Tragic Fall of America's Mayor" states that Maria Ryan wrote a letter to Trump in the last weeks of his presidency. The New York Times got an advance copy of the book.

According to the book, Ryan asked Giuliani if he could pay for Giuliani's time spent defending him during trials for election challenges before asking for the award.

Ryan wrote in the letter that Mr. Giuliani rarely asked for anything for himself. He wants you to give him this on Friday or Monday. Ryan requested a general pardon for Giuliani.

A lawyer for Giuliani told the Times that the letter may not exist and that Giuliani didn't authorize or request it.

The mayor told the president that he wouldn't accept a pardon if he was offered it, according to the Times.

According to the book, the letter never made it to the President because Giuliani's adviser, Bernard B. Kerik, diverted it to MarkMeadows, Trump's chief of staff.

The Georgia criminal investigation into whether or not top Republicans tried to interfere with the 2020 election is being led by Giuliani's lawyers.

According to court records, Giuliani defended the former president after the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago home.

They did not reply to Insider's requests.
