Anthony Joshua's attempt to regain the unified titles ended in disappointment as Oleksandr Usyk won by split decision in Saudi Arabia.

A spirited Joshua, 32, showed some aggressiveness and intent, a vast improvement from their first fight, but could not match the brilliance and ring savviness of the Ukrainian.

The fight was judged by two judges and a third judge. Usyk was the deserving winner.

Joshua has lost to Usyk in back-to-back fights, with the Ukrainian retaining his titles.

The challenger picked up two of Usyk's belts, dropped them on the floor and walked to the dressing room.

One of the greatest fighters of all time is Usyk. He said that it was just emotion. You would understand the passion if you knew my story. I'm not an athlete. I was going to jail when I was released on bail.

The passion we put into this is shown. For this guy to beat me tonight, he must have put in a lot of work, so please give him a round of applause.

I'm not a 12 round fighter. I'm heavy and I'm not 14 stone. Hard work is what it is. The guy here is amazing.

The brilliance of Usyk is that he came back in the 10th round and was landing clean blows. Joshua became a duck after Usyk landed a five punch combination.

There's more to come.
