A bill was introduced on Friday that would make it a crime to provide gender affirming medical care to young people.
puberty blockers and surgeries that allow individuals to alter their body to correspond to a sex that differs from their biological sex are just some of the procedures that would be banned by the "Protect Children's Innocence Act".
Federal funding for gender-affirming health care could be stopped.
During a Thursday appearance on the Fox News program "Tucker Carlson Tonight," the Georgia Republican remarked that child abuse needed to be stopped.
"When it comes to gender-affirming care, which is really child abuse, this is actually an assault and it's child abuse," she said.
She said that the practice should never be done. This needs to be against the law.
There would be a maximum fine of $250,000 and 10 to 25 years in jail for anyone performing such care under the bill.
Alabama passed a law that makes it a felony for doctors to give gender-affirming care to young people.
A federal judge partially blocked Alabama from implementing its law, but health providers are still able to offer puberty blockers and hormones.
Colleges and universities would not be allowed to teach about gender-affirming care under the legislation.
If they're elected to the upper chamber this fall, the GOP Senate nominees in Ohio and Arizona will support the bill, according to the congresswoman.
The bill doesn't have a chance of passing in the current Congress and Republicans are trying to tie it to larger cultural issues.
