Liz Cheney in an interview that aired on Friday railed against Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy potentially becoming House speaker if Republicans regain control of the lower chamber.

In an interview with ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl, Cheney said that McCarthy had a lack of understanding of the role of the speakership after she was asked if the country would be better or worse off.

My opinions about Kevin McCarthy are very clear. The speaker of the house is in the running for the presidency. Cheney said on ABC's "This Week" that the California lawmaker needed to understand and recognize their duty.

I don't think he should be Speaker of the House because he's been unfaithful to the Constitution and he doesn't understand the importance of the role of Speaker. She said that it has been clear.

Cheney joined nine other House Republicans in impeaching Trump for inciting insurrection after breaking with him over his false claims about the 2020 election. Only two of the ten House Republicans who voted for Trump's second impeachment will be serving in Congress in three years.

Cheney's relationship with McCarthy deteriorated after she spoke out against the former president.

Cheney became the vice chair of the House committee investigating the January 6 riot at the Capitol, much to the ire of most Republican lawmakers who wanted to move on from that day.

Hageman defeated Cheney in the party primary after McCarthy endorsed her.

Cheney refused to adhere to Trump's rejection of the 2020 election results and his push to overturn now- President Joe Biden's victory, even though she could have easily been re-elected this year.

It would have been necessary for me to allow him to attack the foundations of our Republic. She said at the time that she wouldn't go that way.

The principles that we are all sworn to protect are more important than the House seat. She said that she understood the political consequences of obeying her duty.
