Despite Joe Biden's election victory, organizers were encouraged by Donald Trump's calls to protest the results of the election. While members of Congress were meeting in the Capitol to certify the results and verify Biden's electoral win, Trump supporters staged an attempted coup.
The insurrectionists deleted photos and social-media posts that proved they participated in the Capitol riot. Some broke their phones, scrubbed their social media accounts, and tried to wipe their hard drives of evidence of their involvement.
It was easier for the FBI to identify and charge those who boasted of their involvement. More than 800 people have been charged in connection with the insurrection, according to Insider's database.
The possibility of being convicted of violating the Espionage Act, which carries a 10-year prison sentence, is one of the many charges that could be brought against Trump.
The Espionage Act bars anyone from sharing or distributing information that could hurt or disadvantage the US.
If investigators determine that Trump violated the Espionage Act by bringing boxes containing classified records home with him, a conviction could be brought down. Some of the boxes were marked as "top secret" according to court documents.
