A Florida college student was killed during a gunfight in Alabama when he pulled his own weapon during a robbery attempt.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that Adam and Mikayla Paulus, both students at the University of Central Florida, were flagged down by a suspect on Sunday.

According to the sheriff, Hider said she had a gun and forced the couple to walk back into the woods after they helped her with her car.

The sheriff said that Hider was shot and killed at the scene after Simjee pulled his gun and wounded him.

Paulus called the police and said there was another woman with Hider. The suspects' camp was located a half-mile away, where they had been living off the grid.

The second suspect and her child were located there.

A 5-year-old child ran from the woods as officers ordered a female to the ground. The child lay the gun on the ground after law enforcement told them to put the shotgun down.

Pinkins was arrested on suspicion of endangering the welfare of a child, murder, two counts of kidnapping and two counts of robbery.

The sheriff said Hider would be jailed on suspicion of murder, two counts of kidnapping, and two counts of robbery.

Clay County District Court Judge David Law banned both law enforcement and defense lawyers from commenting on the case.

Clay County Sheriff Jim Studdard was ordered to scrub his social media posts about the case.

A school representative said that Simjee was a finance major at the University of Central Florida. Paulus was going to start her first semester at the University of Central Florida.
