There was a huge attempt to shut down one of the Cloud Armor customers. It is the largest Layer 7 distributed denial of service attack ever reported.

At its peak, the attack was equivalent to an entire day's worth of visits to the internet encyclopedia. This is an incredible feat of stability for a website that is in the top 10 of all websites.

Google Cloud services logo looks like a multicoloured outline drawing of a cloud.

Load balancing techniques are used to keep web services running even in the face of internet attacks like this one. Cloud Armor was able to handle what would normally be a crushing burden of 46 million queries.

At 10:00 a.m., the attack started. The peak in about 10 minutes was 76 percent bigger than the previous record. Cloud Armor detected the attack and recommended a rule to the customer to block it. The requests dropped after a few minutes when the hacker realized the attempt had failed.

There is a baseline to compare against when it comes to adaptive protection offered bygoogle. It was possible to detect the attack early and block it before it caused any problems.

The volume of attacks is growing so fast that this record may not last.
