According to a court filing, the family of the late actor Bill Paxton has agreed to settle a wrongful death lawsuit against a Los Angeles hospital and the doctor who performed his heart surgery.
The case against Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was going to go to trial next month. Attorneys for Louise and their two children, James and Lydia, filed a notice in Los Angeles Superior Court that they had agreed to a settlement.
The matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of the parties.
Attorneys said that the terms are not public. Emails asking for comment from the defendants were not returned. A judge needs to approve the agreement.
The actor, who was best known for his roles in "Apollo 12," "Titanic" and "Aliens," died in February of last year.
His death certificate shows that he had a stroke 11 days after surgery to replace a heart valve.
The surgeon was accused of using a high risk and unconventional surgical approach that was unnecessary and that he downplayed the procedure's risks.
According to the suit, the misguided treatment caused Paxton to suffer excessive bleeding, cardiogenic shock and a compromised coronary arteries.
According to court documents, the defendants said that Paxton and his family were aware of the risks of the procedure and went ahead with it. There was no negligent act that led to his death.
The four-year legal battle was marked by attempts by the Paxton family to get more information from the hospital.
The actor, who was born and raised in Fort Worth, Texas, amassed nearly 100 credits, including "Twister" and "Weird Science." When he died, he was in a CBS show.
That's right.
