Britain's Dina Asher-Smith had to settle for second place after Switzerland's Mujinga Kambundji won the European Championships 200m final.
Kambundji led by a small margin with 80m to go, but the defending champion could not catch her.
The Swiss athlete finished in front of Asher- Smith.
"I came here to win, so I am not very happy," Asher-Smith said.
The year so far has been mixed. I'm happy to be here but not as happy as a silver.
I'm in a better shape than that, but I came second and it's what it is.
The season has gone from career high points to deflating lows.
Asher-Smith claimed a bronze medal in the 200m at the World Championships in Eugene, one of the strongest 200m finals in history.
She was unable to compete in the Commonwealth Games due to a injury and lost her grandmother in the summer.
She had a chance to defend her 100m crown on Tuesday but she had calves that were too small.
Asher- Smith called for more research into the effects of periods on performance.
She arrived in Germany to defend her three titles, but only the 4x 100m relay is a possibility.
Asher-Smith said it had been a good year.
I'm still running and I'm running good times. I want to run 10.8 in September.
Kambundji was followed home by Ida Karstoft.
Jodie Williams was able to console herself with a season's best 22.85 seconds.
There will be more from the European Championships in 2020.
