After transferring back to his home state of Texas, the heralded recruit who began his college career at Ohio State, was named the Longhorns' starting quarterback.
Hudson Card, who started the 2021 season as Texas' starter but mostly played behind Casey Thompson, had been competing with Ewers for the position.
The Longhorns open the season with a game against Louisiana-Monroe.
After Texas banned high school athletes from earning money from their name, image and likeness, Ewers decided to sign with Ohio State in the class of 2021. Ewers did not attempt a pass for the Ohio State football team.
Steve Sarkisian said earlier this week that he had an idea of who would be the team's starting quarterback and would let the team know soon. There was a hint that an announcement was coming Friday.
The team did a rotation with Card and Thompson in 2021.
"I think it's hard for a quarterback to get into rhythm when you don't know how many throws you're going to get, and you take too many chances," he said. The decision-making is not very good.
The quarterback room is going to be added in Texas in the next few years. Arch Manning, one of the top players in the country, has decided to play for the Longhorns.
