According to an internal memo, on Friday it told employees that it would expand abortion coverage. The Supreme Court struck down the federal right to access the procedure in late June.
According to a memo reviewed by CNBC, Walmart will cover abortion when there is a health risk to the mother, rape or incest, ectopic pregnancies, or lack of fetal viability.
Walmart will cover travel costs for employees and their family members if they can't get an abortion within 100 miles of their location, according to an email sent by Walmart's Chief People Officer Donna Morris.
Walmart is the nation's largest employer and is located in Arkansas, where strict abortion limits have already been in effect.
Last month, the company's CEO, Doug McMillon, sent an employee-wide email saying that Walmart was "working thoughtfully and diligently to figure out the best path forward." Walmart didn't say what changes they were considering.
Previously, the retailer had more limited abortion coverage. When the health of the mother would be in danger if the fetus were carried to term, the charges for procedures, services, drugs and supplies are not covered.
Morris included the abortion updates in a memo that was about to be sent to employees. She said the company listened to what their associates wanted and made changes.
She said in the memo that they aim to provide quality, competitive and accessible health coverage.
Arkansas, the home state of Walmart, is one of several with a so-called "trigger law" designed to limit abortion access immediately after the decision of the Supreme Court. There are exceptions to the state's ban on all abortions.
The company didn't say anything about the coverage expansion Friday.
