Iga Swiatek questioned why women and men use different balls at the tennis major during a news conference at the Western and Southern Open this week. The tournament doesn't use the same balls for everyone.
"I'm not sure why they are different than men's ones," Swiatek1-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-65561-6556 I don't think it will happen because we are so well-equipped that it wouldn't happen. Fifteen years ago, women probably had elbow injuries because the balls were heavier and they changed them to women's balls, but now we are so well-equipped that it wouldn' When I'm practicing with US Open balls at home in Poland, I'm practicing with men's balls because they are completely different than the tournament balls.
It's difficult to control the women's balls but we are trying to deal with that. I'm not sure why they are different.
The lead-in swing includes the Western & Southern Open and the Canadian Open. Swiatek lost in the round of 16 to Madison Keys in Cincinnati and then in the same round in Toronto.
Swiatek and Paula Badosa asked if they could use the same ball as the men after they complained about the difference.
"I don't think it would be a problem because it's the same company, it's Wilson, but maybe we should push a bit more." The war in Ukraine made me stop pushing and trying to convince WTA. I did not feel well when I played with these balls.
The organization was listening to player concerns and would explore the matter further, according to a statement from the senior vice president of global communications.
"We have begun to hear from a few athletes that they would like to use the extra duty ball instead of the regular felt ball for hardcourt play, and we are considering a change to that ball." The reason for using the regular felt ball was to limit the potential of arm, shoulder, elbow and wrist injuries. We will keep an eye on this and discuss it with our athletes and sports science teams.
Swiatek is not the first person to complain about the ball disparity. After Ashleigh Barty won the Australian Open, her coach told reporters that she would never win the US Open with the current balls. Barty stopped playing tennis after retiring.
The US Open needs to change the ball for the girls, it's a terrible ball for someone like Ash, according to Tyzzer. She used to use a gut racket, but I had to change her to a poly just to get any control of the ball. No one will win that tournament if they keep that ball.
You see the result at the US Open, it was two different players who won it. The ball is what it is.
Five of the previous seven US Open women'schampions have been first-timers. Swiatek will be the top seed at the US Open.
