The Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears played in Seattle.

Second-year quarterback Justin Fields looked sharp for the Bears in his lone drive to begin the game, while the offense struggled to pick up first downs in their first couple of drives.

Seattle went the entire first quarter without a first down, while Chicago was able to set the tone early. After punting the ball away for a third time, the Seahawks were able to score on their third drive.

Smith tried to make his case in the first half by playing the entire game.

The Atlanta Falcons will host the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.

The Week 2 preseason schedule includes a Thursday night game.

NFL preseason game Thursday, Aug. 18

Chicago Bears 27, Seattle Seahawks 11

After 10 plays in Seattle, the Bears' starting offense was done for the day. After Fields went 5-for-7 for 39 yards on the opening drive, the first-team unit scored on a field goal. Fields threw for 39 yards on the opening drive of his first offensive possession in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers, a sign that his execution and operation of the offense are coming along.

While Fields is being pressured at one of the highest rates in the NFL, the Bears are still trying to figure out their offensive line, with TevenJenkins now in the mix to start at right guard. The tendencies of the new Bears scheme can be seen. The expectation of a heavy dose of play-action and bootlegs showed up Thursday with two of Field's pass attempts coming on designed runs. Fields had only 18 attempts on designed rollouts last year, and he completed 98% of them.

The next game is at Cleveland. On August 27th.

After their ugly loss to the Bears, the quarterback competition is not close to being decided by the team. Smith had a chance to widen his lead but he didn't do anything with it.

Seattle's six possessions with Smith under center ended with five punts and a missed field goal. It wasn't all Smith's fault. Three drops and several penalties hurt him. He had two players on the field for a single possession, but lost a starting left guard to an ankle injury.

Smith had an ice wrap on his knee. Smith's lackluster night keeps the door open despite Lock's loss to Covid. Lock will need a strong showing in next week's preseason finale at Dallas to convince Pete Carroll that he's the guy, and he probably needs Smith to struggle again.

The next game is at Dallas. On August 26th.
