The Cornhuskers will have a new starting quarterback for their season opener next week in Dublin, Ireland.

Thompson will take the first rep, according to Scott Frost on his radio show. Thompson started 10 games for Texas last season and was the leader in the Big 12 with 24 touchdown passes and a 63.2% completion rate.

He had been in a competition with Chubba and Smothers for the top job. He wouldn't be surprised if there was more than one quarterback.

"There's no substitute for having played a lot of college football, and there's been less mistakes from him." It was a big leap from the spring ball to the fall. It was probably bothering him more than he thought. Now he's throwing it better.

Thompson will be in charge of an offense that will be led by Mark Whipple, who last year worked at Pitt with a quarterback who was selected in the first round of the NBA draft.

"He's got a good feel for the pocket, throws well, he's doing a good job with our run stuff, and that was a little bit new for him." He's a football player.

The impact of a new offensive line coach, who spent the past four seasons on staff with the Chicago Bears, was discussed by Frost.

He's teaching them hard. It's not because they're not in shape that offensive linemen vomit 15-20 times a day. The man is working them hard. They like it. He freed them up to be aggressive and I like how they come off the ball.
