This is odd. When clips from unaired stories of The Sandman went online, fans wondered if they would get a Christmas special or just a glimpse of the second season.
Two weeks after the initial premiere of the show, the clips are online in the form of one final episode, which spans two separate stories, and is available on demand.
The eleventh episode, Dream of a Thousand Cats/Calliope, is online now with a new episode notification on the thumbnail.
They didn't know how to fit the 30 minute tales into the overall structure of the season so they made them their own thing.
A Dream of a Thousand Cats is a story about a cat telling a tale about how they met the Dream Lord, with voice work from James McAvoy, and even Neil Gaiman himself.
Calliope is a story about a writer who enslaves Calliope in order to make better work. These episodes were not included in the base show as they felt too separate from everything else. In the first season of the show, there were some episodes that were not part of the main storyline.
I can see it being confusing if the last episode was an animated cat adventure and something starring a Doctor Who actor. It's understandable why they did it this way.
It reinforces how unique Sandman is as a property, as all of season 1 was a blend of the different arcs. We haven't gotten an official announcement of season 2 yet, but I think it's going to be based on how the show has performed so far. It was the #1 for the entire first week.
Even if you have finished season 1 already, there will be one more Sandman. I will report back on how this episode compares to the others.
