Clevinger, Machado react to Tatis' suspension (0:42)

The Padres teammates of Fernando Tatis Jr. expressed their disappointment in his 80 game ban. There is a time and a place.

Jurickson Profar, one of the closest friends of Fernando Tatis Jr., said he has been talking with him every day since his suspension was announced.

"He's devastated," Profar said when asked about the situation. He feels terrible.

While the Padres were in Washington, D.C., Major League Baseball suspended him for 80 games after he tested positive for a banned steroid.

He was in the last stages of his recovery from a wrist injury he sustained in a motorcycle accident. He's trying to repair relationships. A source with knowledge of the situation said that the task began on Thursday with a face-to-face meeting with Preller. Peter Seidler signed off on his 14-year, $340 million extension in February of 2021.

Padres manager Bob Melvin said Thursday that the possibility is still up for debate, if and when that's going to happen.

It seems as if his peers would like it.

"We want to hear that he's genuine and honest in here," Wil said. What happened in here stays here. I think that's true in the respect of what happened, but that's not to say that it can't be won back.

The perception of a lack of accountability has grown in the wake of comments made by his father that it was a "catastrophe" for his son's reputation.

"I think what we need to get to is a point in time where we trust," Preller said to the Padres beat reporters. We haven't been able to have that over the last six or seven months.

The Padres expected him to have surgery on his troublesome left shoulder, but he chose not to. The sore wrist that was caused by the motorcycle accident was not reported to the team until after spring training. There was a positive drug test days before he would complete the rehab assignment that would put him at the top of the lineup. The team decided to remove his night from their promotional schedule.

Profar, speaking before the start of a four-game home series against the Washington Nationals, stood firmly behind his teammate. Not me, but not the other way around. I'm here to support him and get him through this so that he can come back and show the world what kind of player he is again.

Profar smiled when he was asked if his teammates felt the same.

He did not know.

The central question is still unanswered.

A lot of things between now and then will dictate that according to one of the core leaders in the club. We're going to have to find a way to get past this because he's our teammate and he's going to be in our locker room. I don't know what that will look like yet, but as time goes on it will be clearer.
