The 29-year-old has filled in for big-name quarterbacks in the past. After Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo were injured, he took over as the starter. After Andrew Luck's retirement, Brissett became the starting quarterback for the Colts. Tua Tagovailoa was injured in Week 2 of last year's season. Since I've been in the league, it's been the next man up, according to Brissett. You have to be ready whenever your number is called, and that experience helps with that as well. He has 37 starts with a 14-23 record despite being a backup for most of his career. Is he good enough to keep this season from getting lost before he returns? The cap space is almost 50 million dollars, so it's possible. They have the leverage to change Garoppolo's base salary to make up for the hit on the cap. The 49ers probably wouldn't demand a high draft pick in exchange for turning the offense over to Lance.

Will Garoppolo be viewed as a worthwhile upgrade by the Cleveland team? The answer may be difficult.
