A team of researchers found that rats that were fed soft drinks like Coke andPepsi had more damage to their brains than rats that didn't drink soft drinks.
It's not a health food to drink soda. Studies have shown that sugars like those found in soft drinks lead to health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, tooth decay, and even death.
The inability to make one's way through a maze may be related to the link between long-term consumption of soft drinks and brain health. That is if you are a rat.
The scientists separated the rats into three age groups to study how cola-based sodas might affect their brains. Each of those age groups were divided into groups for drinking water and drinking Cola.
After 57 days, the scientists ran the rodents through some maze-based behavior testing, and ten days later, the rats were euthanized so that the scientists could look at any differences in their brains.
The water- drinking rodents were fine when examined. Are the soda sippers made of soda? It's not much.
The scientists found that most of the soda-drinkers had worse memories and lower cognitive function than their counterparts, which made it hard for them to navigate the maze.
Guys are poor. It's not surprising that the scientists discovered what they found in the creatures' craniums.
The rattos' brains had different degrees of damage to the frontal cortex, which controls attention, memory, and judgement, and the hippocampus, which plays a major role in both memory and learning.
Neurological damage is always bad. If the rats had been left alive, not being able to make their way through mazes wouldn't have been a problem. In humans, frontal cortex damage has been linked to personality changes and over-impulsivity, as well as injury to the hippocampus, which is thought to play a significant role in many illnesses.
The study is grounded in long term exposure. If a rat were to barely drink cola, it would probably be fine, because the oldest rats, whose brains were the most fully formed, were less affected by soda. That's a different story for a rat that drinks coke.
We can't recommend that the CDC update its recommendations just yet because rats aren't people. We wouldn't be surprised if the cans of cola came with some warnings on them.
There is more on soda being horrible for you.
