Why the NFL and NFLPA settled on Deshaun Watson's punishment (1:49)

Jeff Saturday explains how the league and the union decided on Deshaun's suspension. There is a time and a place for it.

11:58 AM ET

According to a league source, the ClevelandBrowns quarterback will serve an 11 game suspension after he was accused by more than two dozen women of sexual harassment during massage sessions.

The $5 million fine will go to charity.

According to a source, the deal has not been signed but is agreed upon.

"I'm very appreciative of the tremendous support I've received throughout my short time with the Cleveland organization, and I'm grateful that the process has ended," he said. I apologize for any pain this has caused. Accountability is taken for the decisions I make. While I'm away from the team, I want to become the best version of myself on and off the field and support my teammates. I'm looking forward to the future in Cleveland.

In the 13th week of the season, the Houston Texans will travel to face the Cleveland Browns.

The NFL's appeal of Sue L. Robinson's decision to issue a six-game suspension will not be affected by the settlement.

The league and players' union had appointed Robinson to make a decision on the matter.

The league's decision to appeal Robinson's ruling was explained by the league's commissioner.

"As we have previously stated, Deshaun and his representatives have abided by the NFL and NFLPA structure awaiting a final decision and we have respected the process," the owners said. "Now that a decision on discipline has been made, we are committed to investing in programs in Northeast Ohio that will educate our youth regarding awareness, understanding, and most importantly, prevention of sexual misconduct and the many underlying causes of such behavior." Since entering our building, Deshaun has been an outstanding member of our organization and has shown a great dedication to himself both on and off the field. He will be supported as he tries to earn the trust of the community.

In lawsuits filed by 25 women, it's been accused of sexual assault and other inappropriate conduct. From March 2020 to March 2021, the actions were alleged to have been taken by a member of the Texans. One of the 25 lawsuits was dropped after the judge ruled in favor of the people. Two other women didn't file lawsuits against him.

One of the remaining lawsuits is still pending. In July, the Texans reached settlements with 30 women who made claims or were ready to make them against the NFL organization for its alleged "enabling" ofWatson's behavior

The NFL had been looking into whether he had violated its personal conduct policy since 2021. Over the course of several days earlier in the summer, the league interviewedWatson. Several of the women were spoken to by the investigators.

Robinson said that her decision to suspend him for six games was due to his lack of remorse.

After denying all wrongdoing and saying he had "no regrets" for any of his actions during the massage sessions, he apologized to "all the women I have impacted".

Since the beginning of training camp, he has not spoken to reporters.

The Texans received three first-round draft picks as part of the trade with the Cleveland Indians. A new five-year contract was given to Cleveland by the team.

A base salary of $46 million and a signing bonus of $44.965 million are included in his contract with the Browns.

Because Cleveland structured his contract to include a base salary of only $1.035 million, he was only going to lose $57,500 per game suspended.

At the start of training camp, the coach said that he would be the starter in the event of a suspension, and that he had been very impressed with Brissett so far.

"I'm very comfortable with him." He has a good idea of what we are trying to do.

Brissett has 37 starts with a record of 14-23.
