The Patrick Cup will be given to the champion of the 3ICE 3-on-3 hockey league. The winning players will not lift it over their heads.
The founder and CEO of 3ICE said it was heavy. It is 65 pounds.
The first year of the start-up league was defined by innovative thinking, creative solutions to challenges and an untraditional approach to hockey. The 3ICE season ends with a four team tournament at Orleans Arena on Saturday. There would be meetings about the proper way to present a trophy that weighs more than a dog.
The joke is a running joke. If we remove the table, we'll have them skate it below their waist. It's certainly not above their heads.
It would take a year to make the trophy that 3ICE wanted. The base for the Patrick Cup was made of porcelain and was named after league commissioner Craig Patrick.
The coach of the top seed in the 3ICE championship tournament won Lord Stanley's Cup three times as a player. The trophy is almost twice as heavy.
I hope I get to win it, but I'm not trying to lift it," he said.
The plan is to make a lighter trophy for 3ICE.
The first season of 3ICE has a lot of important issues to contend with. After nine weeks of exhausting, exhilarating and frequently innovative hockey, there's a celebratory mood about this first campaign, and not just because there's $1 million on the line in Vegas this weekend.
At the end of his six-team league's first season, Johnston is left wondering about how the imaginative rules could influence the NHL's 3-on-3 overtime, like allowing the puck to be played off the net.
Most of the targets he imagined were hit by 3ICE.
I believe we've destroyed it. He said that the fans were so excited to see them that they were here all the time. The ship is a rocket ship. The sky can't be ignored.
The NHL's 3-on-3 overtime format that was adopted in 2015 inspired the creation of 3ICE. The plan was to have eight teams named for different companies. Six teams were named after former NHL players.
Hockey Hall of Famers Guy Carbonneau, Grant Fuhr, and Larry Murphy are just a few of the big names associated with 3ICE.
When it began, we were all looking at each other. It is a new start-up league. It was cool to be a part of it after we got the guys on the ice.
The coaches weren't just window dressing, according to Jeremy Brodeur, who played on Carbonneau's team.
"You would think that they were just faces behind the bench, but they actually worked hard to get a system down or match their lines," he said.
Most of the players had never played in the NHL.
The ninth season of a minor league career was the last time Tyler Murovich played in a professional hockey game. He is a hockey coach at the Ice Castle in Castle Shannon, Pennsylvania. He was on the radar of the 3ICE executive team because of his speed and creativity.
He thought he'd be on a taxi squad this season at the recruitment showcase he went to. He was tied for second in the league in goals with 20.
The league was built on these stories. There is a player in the ECHL who gets the chance to hit the SportsCenter highlight reel with an exciting scoring move. Whitney, a Boston College product who had five NHL games in his career before playing with the Iserlohn Roosters in Germany last season, was the league's leading scorer.
Some guys early in the season weren't sure about this because they were training for their own upcoming seasons. The money on the line has made them realize how fun it is.
They got the right group of guys here. They were perfect for this style of hockey because they played in the NHL or in the minor league for a long time.
3ICE played nine weeks in eight locations, with opening and closing weekends in Las Vegas. The teams played in a single day tournament with different levels of prize money at stake.
There were two eight-minute halves with a running clock that only stopped for penalties and injuries. The teams had a goalie.
On Friday the league would fly in personnel to the host city. The biggest learning curve was travel. There were a few times when coaches wouldn't arrive at the arena until a few hours before the game because of the frequent flight cancellation.
"Bringing the 3ICE road show across the border was an absolute nightmare and I have doubts about returning to Canada in 2023," he said.
He said that a lot of men couldn't cross the border because they didn't want to get vaccine.
After the previous weekend's games, they would gather for a "welcome and orientation dinner" on Friday night in order to get a better idea of what to expect the next day. In a team meeting, Johnston would speak for around 15 minutes and present a short slideshow.
What was at stake in the games would be reviewed by them. The most recent scoring leader would be announced. Murovich got called out for leaving too early on a penalty shot. In-season rule changes would be announced as league officials saw what worked and what needed to be changed.
An optional skate would precede formal practices before the games started.
There were four games in the opening round, two in the semifinals and one in the championship game. The schedule was difficult for the players.
If you played the first game you could sit in the locker room for 48 minutes. He said it was difficult to keep your legs under you.
There are not every 3-on-3 overtimes in the NHL that are a classic. They had one or two dud games a week, but they were balanced. The totals for the games were close to where he anticipated them to be, but from an intensity standpoint, the on-ice product exceeded his expectations.
There were a few reasons for that increase.
This is the first thing. The players were in good shape. Some of the guys thought it would be fun to play in a beer league. They were not sure what to expect early on. In the first week or two, guys were gassed, and then they realized that in their off week, they had to make sure their Cardio was going.
There are two They were better able to understand the game. Thanks to 3ICE's unique rules, the players hadn't played it like this before. It was a short learning curve, according to the man.
There are three. They were aware of the consequences. While some of the players might have approached 3ICE as a way to stay in shape during the summer or tour North America on someone else's dime, the intensity of the games grew as they started to see real money.
The team gets $50,000 every time they win, he said.
The top earning players will make more than $170,000 over the course of the regular season.
The pace of play and jawing between players saw a noticeable increase as the season drew to a close.
In Nashville, that was the case on August 6. Before the season finale, Team Carbonneau had to win one of its last two games. Five teams advanced to play in Las Vegas this weekend.
The assignment was taken to heart by Carbonneau, who broke down tape between games. He said he didn't take the elimination easy.
He was walking around the locker room. His team had a chance to win a million dollars. They thought it was serious. When the coaches step in between the lines, they are not friends.
Team Mullen has won five of the eight events on the tour this season and that has made it worse.
Some coaches don't like the fact that Joey Mullen's team won five out of eight weeks. "He said it."
The friends had tensions.
It isn't my fault!" The players did a good job. Everybody wants to win. It has been good for most of the time. We did have some issues with the rules.
Brodeur was drawn to 3ICE for the chance to make some amazing saves. The collection of rules that defined the league caught his attention.
Brodeur said his hockey brain had been changed after he played under them.
He said that he played in a charity tournament in Philadelphia and was freaked out when the players didn't play the puck off the net. Right now, my brain is in 3ICE mode.
A lot of the 3ICE game looks like the NHL's overtime, with no fights, little physical activity and lots of scoring chances. There were many different variations on that theme. There are new rules for 3-on-3 hockey in 3ICE.
There was no power play. The opponent gets a 4-on-3 power play when a team is assessed a penalty. The opposing team will get a penalty shot. There is a chance that fans will be able to choose the shooter via the league's app.
The best goal of the inaugural season was scored on such a play, as Hawkins of Team Leclair pulled off this twirling lacrosse- goal beauty.
Penalties called "Jailbreak" The other skaters on the ice for his shot were not the only ones. The "jailbreak" penalty shot was instituted by 3ICE. A clear path leads to the goal for the shooter. As soon as he touches the puck, the rest of the skaters start running after him.
Everybody is following the guy. There have been a few goals scored off of the boards. The NHL might adopt that.
Icing the puck is a violation. Defending teams cannot just shoot the puck down the ice to end the pressure in their zone, even if it is an empty net at the other end. Penalty shots are a result of any "intentional" icing. An attempt at a hockey play that leads to icing is exempt from the rule.
There is no goalie restriction. Goalies are protected inside a blue arcs from the front of the net to the end boards. Murovich said it's also known as The mushroom.
The defenders have to clear the zone so the goalie can get the puck. The team that scored has to move all the way back to the neutral zone so the other team can start their rush up ice. It's because.
Almost no faceoffs are present. The faceoff will start the half. The play starts after the goalies have stopped the game.
The pucks are in the air. If the puck is cleared off the net that is draped behind the end board glass, it will bounce back onto the ice.
I think it's great. In the summer, we always do that to keep the game going. It's fast paced.
There is a rule called the half court rule. Once a player crosses the midcourt line, the ball cannot be dribbled or passed back across that line. If the offensive team brings the puck back over the center red line without interference from the defense, that's a turnover.
"You can't just go back to the same place and kill the clock," he said. It's not very interesting. It's a simple decision. I think that the NHL is going to adopt that.
3ICE might affect the rules of 3-on-3 hockey in the NHL. This is just the beginning for the league, according to the man.
Heading into the season, Johnson had two goals.
He said that they had to nail the television broadcast.
3ICE had a deal with CBS Sports in the US and TSN in Canada. Cameramen on the ice was one of the innovations that was pleased with the video product.
He said that he would place his broadcast against anything in hockey and sports.
He admitted that the gates at the arenas were not strong enough for 3ICE.
We didn't do as well as we could a little bit. The majority of the crowds were between 3000 and 4,000. Most of the lower bowl should be sold in the NHL buildings. And I will get there.
3ICE held events in NHL-sized arenas in Pittsburgh, Nashville, Quebec City, Denver, Hershey, London and Las Vegas. The NHL buildings felt cavernous because of the crowd size, but they also had high-quality facilities that the players appreciated.
Brodeur said that even if the crowd is small, you still feel like you are getting a pro experience by being in the locker rooms.
3ICE wants to go to cities more often in the future. In a 10-week season, the league would play in the same city in weeks 1 and 5, weeks 2 and 6 and so on. Finding tenants that will work with the league is one of the keys to selecting these areas.
He said that they would hammer their season- ticket holders for them.
The goal is for more sponsors to come on board next season.
There's also sports betting. Sportradar is 3ICE's data analytic partner and the league has embraced betting in its second season. There is a prop betting market for 3ICE, as well as the tournament format and robust offense.
The plan for 3ICE is to make money in its third season. The league spent a lot on facilities, travel, prize purses and other expenses in the first year. 3ICE is expected to do a Series B of financing by the end of the year.
Player quality is anticipated to increase.
The recruiting for 3ICE is done and we're already recruiting. The phone is making noise.
He wants to keep roster spots open for college players and unknown talents while increasing the number of ex- NHLers.
3ICE doesn't know what the Olympics can do to boost the 3-on-3 format's standing.
3-on-3 hockey is being considered for the Winter Olympics by the International Ice Hockey Federation. The adoption of Olympic 3-on-3 hockey could be a boon to 3ICE when it happens.
That's the most important thing for 3ICE. The league will learn from its first season whether it's tweaking its schedule, adjusting its rules or ordering a trophy that won't require a trip to the doctor after it's lifted.
3ICE should stay the course.
He said that people needed to see the broadcasts. People need to know what's happening on social media. It's important for people to see it in person because they will notice the speed of the game.
It is enjoyable. It isn't locked up. Music is playing during the game. It's hair on fire.
