With an update rolling out now on the App Store, the team behind the popular Pixelmator series of image editing apps announced that the app will switch to subscription based pricing.

Existing users of the app will continue to have unlimited access without having to pay again, while new users of the app will be charged a monthly fee. The lifetime purchase option is more expensive than the previous one-time price of $7.99.

There are some big problems with an upfront pricing model, including slower development and a focus on new users over existing users, according to a post on the team's website. The App Store does not allow paid apps to offer free trials or upgrade discounts.

The hope is that there are enough users who use the app regularly to justify the yearly fee. It looks like this is the best way to ensure the continued development of the photo.

A sneak peek at thePixelmator Photo app for Mac was provided by the company. When the app is released later this year or early next year, anyone who subscribes to the photo service will get a free photo for their mac. Existing users will be eligible for a discount.

There are no plans for the standard version of Pixelmator to be changed to a subscription-based pricing, and there is a major update to be released in the near future.
