The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit's intellectual property rights have been acquired by the Embracer Group. A sixth deal for a company in the PC and console gaming space is not included in the total.
The Lord of the Rings and Hobbit rights give Embracer control over the rights to movies, video games, board games, merchandising, stage productions, and even theme parks. The big and expensive take on Lord of the Rings that will debut on Prime Video is included. There could be more movies based on characters from the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
More than 100 studios are part of the Embracer group, which recently acquired Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and Thief. Around 8 percent of the company's shares were purchased by Saudi Arabia.
Smaller developers can now create physical copies of their games thanks to the addition ofLimited Run Games, which is well known for collector's editions. Killing Floor, Maneater, and Rising Storm are some of the best-selling books by Tripwire. Singtrix and Tuxedo Labs were acquired by the publishing group.
Dark Horse is a comics and entertainment brand that is owned by Embracer. "I am pleased to welcome an amazing group of entrepreneur-led companies to the Embracer family and to extend our portfolio with some truly remarkable intellectual property and franchises, including The Lord of the Rings," says Embracer co-founder and CEO Lars Winge fors in a statement. The group has become a natural and preferred buyer of profitable companies in the gaming and entertainment industry.
There is at least one secret purchase that Embracer isn't revealing yet. According to a financial filing,Embracer has entered into an agreement to acquire another company within PC/ console gaming. The purchase price for this un-disclosed acquisition is somewhere between third and fourth largest.
The deal to acquire Square Enix's three major Western game studios was Embracer's biggest acquisition to date. Sony and Take-Two spent a lot of money on different companies. Microsoft is in the process of acquiring a large company.
