The announcement was made Wednesday that he had been cleared of the disease.

Dick Vitale @DickieV

Dr Rick Brown just notified me with my results of my major Pet Scan & told me news I wish EVERY cancer patient can hear . He said “Dick u have gone from being in remission to being CANCER FREE” ! Thank u to ALL of YOU that have sent me 🙏🙏🙏 .

Vitale keeps his fans updated on his recovery progress on his account, and he said Wednesday's news was something he wished every cancer patient could hear.

After undergoing multiple surgeries to remove a melanoma, he was diagnosed with lymphoma. He needed to take a break from broadcasting after he was diagnosed with acancerous condition on his vocal cords.

In his December update, he said that Dr. Rick Brown had said that he was cured from melanoma. I hope that my treatments continue to be a success.

Vitale's journey in the game began before he became the face of the college basketball coverage on Disney's ABC network.

He was the head coach of the Detroit Pistons for 12 games in the 1979-80 season, after four years as the head coach at Detroit Mercy.
