Great Britain's Matt Hudson-Smith successfully defended his men's 400m title at the European Championships as teammate Alex Haydock-Wilson took the bronze.

Hudson- Smith moved away from the field in the final 100m to win the gold medal in 44.53 seconds.

He won a world bronze in Eugene in July and a Commonwealth Games silver a few weeks later.

Haydock-Wilson was the fastest person.

Switzerland's Ricky Petrucciani took the silver medal with a best performance of 45.03.

Victoria Ohuruogu didn't collect another medal in her excellent season.

The 29-year-old Commonwealth silver medallist had set a new personal best of 50.50 seconds in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get her onto the podium.

The Netherland's Femke Bol won the 400m and 400m hurdles in a time of 49.44, with Poland's Natalia Kaczmarek and Anna Kielbasinska taking second and third place.

Rhasidat Adeleke set a new national record of 50.53.

Hudson-Smith earned his first individual world medal in Eugene, but he was denied Commonwealth gold by Muzala Samukonga.

But the British record holder displayed his class as he capped a superb hat-trick of medals with a brilliant gold in Munich, pulling away on the final bend to secure a dominant victory.

After three years of "absolute hell" in which he battled with injury, debt and the Covid epidemic, Hudson- Smith admitted that he had struggled with his mental health.

Since moving to Florida, he has had to overcome a number of injuries, including missing last year's Olympics, as well as accruing significant debt.

After narrowly missing out on the world final in Eugene, Haydock-Wilson was able to hold on to win the bronze medal.

I don't have a lot of words. Haydock-Wilson said it was a combination of a lot of hard work.

It's a good check point in my journey. I want to keep going.

I keep dreaming my goals even though they are frightening. With the help of Matt and my team, I can achieve anything.

Pedro Pichardo of Portugal won the European title in the men's triple jump with a leap of 17.50m as Ben Williams finished sixth in the men's triple jump.

The women's pole vault was won by Finland's Wilma Murto, who also won the gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

France's defending champion in the men's 110m hurdles was pipped to gold by Spain's Asier Martinez in a photo finish.

Jade O'Dowda will be going into the final three events in 11th place while Holly Mills is 19th.

A personal-best high jump performance had propelled O'Dowda to fourth overall after the morning session's two events, but she slipped down the rankings after finishing seventh in the shot put and fifth in her 200m heat

Nafi Thiam is the leader with the long jump, javelin and 800m to come on Friday.
