The effectiveness of Pfizer and BioNTech's Covid-19 vaccine in teens fades rapidly in the weeks after vaccination, according to research published Wednesday in a journal.
The effectiveness of Pfizer's Covid vaccine waned over time and only offered limited protection as early as 30 days after the second dose, according to a peer reviewed study.
Of the roughly 3.2 million teens involved in the study, nearly 29,300 tested positive for Covid and 11 of them needed major hospital support.
More than 81% of the study group had received at least one shot, 75% had been double vaccine and 9% had received a third dose, but more than half of them had an infectious disease.
According to the researchers, the findings are in line with other research that shows that protection against infections drops off quickly after vaccinations.
Two doses of Pfizer's shot might be enough to protect teens against severe disease, despite waning immunity, according to the researchers.
The study's findings may have been influenced by potential changes in testing behavior based on vaccination status during the omicron surge and different virus variant spreading during the study.
It's no surprise that the findings are in line with the evidence that protects against infections after immunizations. Initial Covid vaccine trials were unable to assess how long the protection would last against the evasive new versions of the vaccine. The vaccines offer high levels of protection against serious illness, hospitalization and death for a long time. Experts believe that this is the most important function of vaccine. Boosters are able to top up this protection when it does flag, but experts are not sure if they are beneficial for at-risk groups or not.
A new vaccine. The vaccines in widespread use are based on the original coronaviruses strain that was discovered in 2020 Moderna is one of the major vaccine makers that is working on another generation of vaccines. The United Kingdom became the first country to approve Moderna's omicron/original booster vaccine.
Experts say that we cannot boost our way out of the covidemic.

A study found that Pfizer's Covid vaccine protection fades just weeks after the second and third dose.
