  • Liz Cheney lost in the GOP congressional primary.

  • She criticized the election in the speech.

  • She said she paid a price for being one of the few Republicans who opposed Trump.

Liz Cheney said Tuesday that she could have won re-election in Wyoming if she had supported Trump's false claims of election fraud.

She said it wasn't a price she would pay.

Cheney made the remark in a defiant concession speech after being defeated by Hageman.

I won this primary two years ago. I would have done the same thing again. The path was clear, but it would have required me to go along with the lie about the election.

It would have been necessary for me to allow him to attack the foundations of our republic. I wouldn't take that path.

The principles that we are all sworn to protect are more important than the House seat. I was aware of the political consequences of obeying my duty.

Our republic depends on the goodwill of all candidates for office to accept the results of elections. Hageman got the most votes in the primary. She got the win. She agreed to concede the race. The election is over. The real work starts now.

Hageman is a vigorous advocate of his false claim that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from him.

Decision desk HQ projected that Hageman would beat Cheney. Hageman received 66.3% of the votes to Cheney's 28.8%.

Cheney dislikes Trump a lot. She voted for his impeachment in the wake of the January 6 riot at the US Capitol, and is one of two anti- Trump Republicans on the House committee.

In order to oust Cheney from her congressional seat, Trump poured resources into the state of Wyoming. She had been there for a while.

Cheney's defeat is the biggest victory for Trump in his attempts to cleanse the party of those who oppose him personally or who have argued against his election-fraud conspiracy theories.

Trump predicted that Cheney would disappear into the depths of political oblivion after he was defeated.

Cheney warned of the impact of Trump's rhetoric on America and said she would continue to oppose him out of office.

She said that the nation is heading towards crisis, lawlessness and violence. No American should support election deniers for any reason.

"I will do everything in my power to make sure that Trump is never again near the Oval Office," she said. And I'm talking about it.
