In her state's new system of ranked-choice voting, Murkowski will face three challengers in the fall, including one backed by Trump.

She is an incumbent senator running for her fourth term.

Primary elections in Alaska no longer pit Republicans against Republicans and Democrats against each other. The four candidates with the most votes in the general election are the ones who compete against each other. Ranked-choice voting will be used in that election as well.

There were 19 candidates on Tuesday's ballot. Since she was one of seven Republicans who voted to convict him for inciting the insurrection, Trump has been campaigning for Tshibaka.

Tshibaka was endorsed by the leaders of the Alaskan Republican Party. After they voted to censure Murkowski for voting to impeach Trump, they got an endorsement.

Murkowski has shown she is not afraid of taking on extremists. She launched a write-in campaign after losing her primary to a tea party candidate. She won without any help from her party.

Voters approved a new election system in 2020. Only one of the four top vote-getting candidates advanced in the primary. In the general election, Murkowski, who is the most moderate Republican in today's Senate, is likely to pull votes from Republicans, independents and Democrats.

The general election in Alaska will function like a second round of voting. If the first and later choices don't make it to the next round, voters' second, third and fourth choices are taken into account. One candidate gets more than 50% of the vote.

Murkowski has more money than Tshibaka. According to Federal Election Commission disclosures, the Republican senator has more cash on hand than Tshibaka. That is more than five times the amount of money.

It isn't clear if Murkowski has this in the bag in November. She knew she could breathe easier going into the primary.

In between a stop at a renewable energy fair and a soak in a pool at a hot springs resort, she told the Washington Post that there was no great anticipation about whether or not Lisa Murkowski would advance. It has a different feeling.
