According to sources familiar with the move, the New York Mets are going to call up one of the top prospects in baseball in order to stem the tide of injuries in their infield.
The Mets are going to play the second game of a four-game series in Atlanta. They placed infielder Luis Guillorme on the injured list with a groin strain that will sideline him for more than a month, and EduardoEscobar could join him on the injured list.
Baty is a left-handed hitting outfielder who went to the Mets in the 12th round of the draft. Baty was dinged for being an older high school player but the Mets bought into the bat and have been rewarded handsomely. Between Double-A and a week's worth of games at Triple-A, Baty is hitting.315/.410/.533 with 19 home runs.
At the trade deadline, teams inquired about Baty, but the Mets didn't want to talk about him or their top prospect.
The Mets' desire to complement a World Series-caliber core with hometown talent is evident, and Baty is among New York's greatest successes.
The Mets need more than just a goal. They are trying to win the NL East. They lead the Atlanta Braves by 412 games going into Tuesday's game.
