Under threat of extinction and a testament to the resilience of wild creatures in wild places, the African rhino is an enduring symbol.

The member of the Big Five is in the wilds of Africa.

We'll show you how to make it happen in honor of World Rhino Day.

Rhinos: a picture painted in black and white

Elephants are larger than rhinos. Rhinos are so large that no other predator can take down an adult rhino, and sometimes baby rhinos are killed by lions.

The names of the two main species of African rhinoceros are not very accurate. White rhinos are named for their lip shape, but they aren't named for their colors.

Black rhinos are larger than white rhinos, but still clock in between 700 and 1400 kilogrammes. Most of the time, black rhinos are found in thickets and woods. The large white rhino is a grazer and can weigh up to 3600 kilogram.

In camp and in the wild, you can expect to see a lot of animals.

A social life

In areas where rhino density is high, breeding males will attack competitors. In the Etosha National Park, rhinos often share waterholes with other rhinos at night. The matriarch of most rhino families is the mother and her young. When the children become independent at around two to four years old, the mother can breed again.

A rhino’s horn

The horn of a rhino is made from a strand of hair and nails. The horn's use in traditional Asian medicines, including as an aphrodisiac, is one of the reasons why it is worth so much today. The ancient Persians believed that rhino horn could detect poisons. It has been used to make the handles of daggers in Yemen, as well as walking sticks and door handles, in other parts of the world.

According to the latest estimates, a single rhino horn can sell for up to US$65,000 on the black market in Asia.

The best places to see rhinos on safari

It was once possible to find rhinos across Africa, even deep in the desert. Southern Africa and East Africa are home to the last two strongholds of the rhino, which were wiped out in the 20th century.

There are top tips to make your trip more affordable.

South Africa

The majority of white rhinos in South Africa are found here. In Kruger National Park and the surrounding reserves, you can find a lot of sightings. There are many private reserves and Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park is one of them.

Namibia

Black rhinos can be seen in the waterholes of Etosha National Park. It is a great alternative.

Kenya

Ol Pejeta Conservancy and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy are two of the best places to find black and white rhinos in Africa. The national parks of Tsavo West, Meru, and Aberdare are some of the best places to visit.

Tanzania

There is a dense population of black rhinos in the crater. There are a few in the park.

Botswana

Rhinos have been reintroduced into the Delta, but they are rare. You can find a rhino sanctuary northwest of Gaborone.

Zambia

Black rhinos can be found in North Luangwa National Park.

Zimbabwe

White and black rhinos can be seen in Zimbabwe's Matobo National Park.

eSwatini (formerly Swaziland)

Black and white rhinos are abundant in the game reserve.

Are Rhinos in peril?

The white rhino is a great success story. The white rhino may have been extinct in the 20th century. The current number is between 17 and 18. Most of the white rhinos in South Africa are still alive. The white rhino has been listed as Near Threatened because of its success in recovery.

The northern white rhinoceros is in danger of extinction. The Ol Pejeta Conservancy has only two females remaining. Sudan was the last male to die.

Are you ready to go for a drive in Africa?

The black rhino has made a dramatic recovery but not as much as the white rhino. There were 600,000 black rhinos in the wild in 1900, and as many as 70,000 remain in 1970. In 1995 there were only 2410 survivors. There has been a slow but steady recovery to a continent-wide population. The species is critically important.

The auction of a hunting license for a black rhino caused international controversy when it was auctioned off with a promise that the proceeds would be used for rhino protection. The government claimed that critics of its policy caused an earlier bid of $1 million to be withdrawn. The government said that the rhino in question, an older and aggressive bull male, was a serious threat to other rhinos.
