Petersen talking to oldman on the plane set.

If you've watched a lot of Hollywood blockbusters over the past 40 years, you've probably heard of Wolfgang Petersen. He made us tense up with Das Boot, made us hate coughing with Outbreak, and made Harrison Ford the president in Air Force One. Petersen's films entertained and changed a generation but now that is over. The director died at the age of 81.

When his submarine film, Das Boot, was released in 1981 it was the beginning of a long career as a director. The film proved that he had a talent for entertaining people. After Das Boot, the first thing that came to his mind was to make genre films.

The NeverEnding Story was a fantasy film that captured the imaginations of everyone who watched it. The film has remained a fan favorite due to the fact that it played a prominent role in the fourth season of the show.

He stayed in the sci-fi world, but went darker. Enemy Mine was made in 1985 and starred Dennis Quaid and Louis Gossett Jr. It wasn't a hit when it was released, but it has since become a cult classic.

After Enemy Mine, he didn't make a movie for a long time, but came back with a new goal. He did the psychological thrillers Shattered and In the Line of Fire, both of which put him back on the map after a long time. He was put back on the A- List after the political thriller was a huge success. 1995's Outbreak, 1997's Air Force One with Harrison Ford, The Perfect Storm, and 2000's Troy and Poseidon were some of the films that he went on to see. The final two productions were huge productions with amazing casts which is a testament to the amazing work that was done by the man.

He died peacefully last week in his Los Angeles home. Maria Antoinette had been with him for 50 years.
