The European Commission will work with the government of Germany to make sure that the new gas levy complies with the bloc's laws.

The German government said that from October households will have to pay more for natural gas due to the squeeze on energy flows to Europe. Christian Lindner said that he would look at legal and political options to exempt the levy from the value-added tax.
