One of the world's largest airlines has invested in a supersonic jet startup. On Tuesday, American Airlines announced that it had recently agreed to buy 20 Overture aircraft from Boom, with the option to purchase an additional 40 planes if things go well. One of the strongest shows of support for Boom has been made by United Airlines. There is only one startup that has yet to build a passenger jet.
At the beginning of the year, Boom said it would build a manufacturing facility in North Carolina. The first completed jet won't fly until sometime in 2026, but the company expects to start construction on its "Overture Superfactory" later this year. Boom is still bullish about the future of the company. The company thinks the Mach 1.7 jet can complete flights between Newark and London in less than four hours and San Francisco to Tokyo in less than six hours. Overture will be a net-zero carbon aircraft because of its ability to fly on sustainable aviation fuels, according to the company.
