The appetite for graphic novels for younger readers drove the growth of the comics industry. Even publishers whose business is squarely aimed at older comic fans have taken note, with Marvel entering into an agreement with Scholastic, the 800-pound gorilla of kids' lit, and smaller publishers trying to spin up imprints.

Papercutz, one of the earliest and best-regarded companies specializing in the kids' market, has been acquired by Florida-based publisher Mad Cave Studios. The deal's terms were not made public.

Papercutz was founded by Terry Nantier, who also runs the international comics and graphic novel publisher, and editor Jim Salicrup, who was responsible for the creation of Spider-Man's Super Stories. It has been around since 2005. The company has a singular focus on using comics to get kids interested in reading from an early age, and long editorial experience understanding what works and what doesn't, giving it a huge head start in both branding and know-how.

Papercutz is known for developing original literary comics for children, licensed comics for The Smurfs, and other kid-oriented properties. The backlist of the imprint is in the hundreds. Papercutz has sold millions of copies of its biggest hits, which is in line with the increase in the rest of the market.

The classic Asterix by Rene Goscinny and Albert Uderzo is one of the works that Papercutz has issued. Roughly 25% of their business is international markets. The company's hit titles have been featured in book fairs for many years, which is the main factor in driving sales and readership for comics for this audience. Distribution arrangements will not change after the merger.

Mad Cave Studios, a relatively new addition to the comics publishing landscape that has just started to make inroads in the direct market with fantasy-adventure titles, acquiring a known and trusted brand was a smart way to gain instant credibility in the space. It doubled the size of the company and added a lot of titles to the catalog.

Mark London, founder and CEO of Mad Cave Studios, said thatPapercutz's devoted fan base and well-established licenses make it the perfect complement to Mad Cave's current vision. Mad Cave will be the best place to get new content for different age groups with the addition of Papercutz. It's the next step in building an industry-leading publisher, a commitment we have to our talent, the fans, and the comics community.

Mad Cave's first venture into the YA space was the launch of its new imprint. The acquisition of Papercutz gives them reach into the young reader and middle- grade categories, which have been the white-hot core of the booming children's market. Mad Cave can now piggyback on the reputation Papercutz built among teachers, librarians and reading advocates.

The acquisition of Papercutz is a great addition to the Mad Cave publishing group. The expertise, talent, and content of Papercutz has been welcomed to the Mad Cave team and continues to grow.

Mad Cave is doing a good job with their books. Papercutz was placed with a company that brought fresh material and a new approach to those markets.

Rex E.Ogle will be the new head of editorial for Papercutz after the merger. Mad Cave already has an amazing readership in both the adult and young adult sectors, so it's exciting to add our middle grade line to the overall list.

The acquisition of Papercutz is strategic for Mad Cave as it tries to expand its reach among older readers in a highly competitive market for non-superhero genre stories. Studios and others. DC and Marvel have only just realized that young readers eventually become older readers, something that has been happening for a long time. Mad Cave is getting the most out of the merger by increasing its marketing and editorial capacities.

The entry point to the rest of the line will be created by providing licensed books, original stories, and creator-owned projects. We will be able to provide fresh content as readers grow older. Papercutz can provide action, adventure, fantasy, mystery, scary stories, and of course, some of the most recognizable characters in the media, if a child is a reluctant reader or reads well ahead of their peers.

The Papercutz imprint will be publishing more content. We couldn't be more proud of this. We want to make a difference to kids.
