Breanna Stewart is always looking for ways to improve her game, and this season she achieved a couple more career milestone.

She became the first player to repeat as The Associated Press WNBA Player of the Year after leading the league in scoring for the first time.

Stewart received six votes for AP Player of the Year, edging A'ja Wilson, who received four votes. Stewart is the first two time winner of the award.

Stewart said it was an honor to be the best in the league. I've been trying to get better since I joined the league. The league as a whole should be elevated. We're motivated by more and trying to win a title.

The Seattle Storm will play Washington in the first round of the playoffs.

The league awards will be announced over the course of the playoffs.

Wilson was chosen as the AP's defensive player of the year. Wilson averaged 1.9 blocks and 1.4Steals a game.

She was named the most improved player by her teammates.

The first ex-WNBA player to win the AP Coach of the Year award was Tanisha Wright. She was one of six people to be a head coach in the league this season.

It is good to have former players on the bench. We put our stamp on the league. I am proud to be a part of that group of players that have impacted the league in a different way.

The other AP winners were also included.

  • After winning the AP's Most Improved Player, Brionna Jones was a unanimous choice for the sixth woman of the year. She averaged 13 points, 5.1 rebound and 1.2 steal for Connecticut.

  • The award for comeback player of the year was given to Thomas, who missed most of the regular season because of an injury. The Sun's Thomas averaged 13.4 points, 8.2 Rebounds and 6.1 Assists

  • Rhyne Howard was chosen as the Atlanta Dream's rookies of the year. Atlanta won six more games than it did last season, thanks in part to Howard's 16.2 points and 4.5 rebound average.

"Rhy put us on her back and made a statement for herself and the organization and franchise," Wright said. "Carry that load and do it with the grace and poise she did it with, I'm super proud of her and her accomplishments."
