Putin accused the US and the West of wanting to drag out the war in Ukraine.

He said that Nancy Pelosi's recent visit to Taiwan, which angered Russia's ally China, had been a "thoroughly planned provocation" by the U.S.

Putin claimed that the invasion was being carried out to make sure the security of Russia and its citizens.

Russia claims it is carrying out a special military operation to liberate the pro-Russian regions in eastern Ukraine which it supports.

Widespread destruction, death and displacement have been caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. At least 5,500 civilians have been killed in the fighting but the true number is likely to be far higher given the chaotic nature of recording such data during times of war.

Russia's invasion has led to international condemnation and wide-ranging economic sanctions on the country's key sectors.

While deploring the country's pro-Western government, the Russian leader has extolled the unity of Russians and Ukrainians.

Political analysts told CNBC that Putin's claims towards the Ukrainian government are nonsense, reflecting an irrational and ill-judged attitude towards the leadership in Kyiv. Western officials and close followers of Russia think that Putin is trying to create false and misleading narratives with his comments.

The U.S. and its European allies in NATO want to assist the defense of Ukraine's territorial sovereignty with assistance in the form of weapons, financial and humanitarian aid.

Russia blames NATO for starting the war in Ukraine and says the West's help is the culmination of years of anti-Russian sentiment.

The lead-up to the war in Ukraine began in late 2021 with Russia amassing more than 100,000 troops at the border with its smaller neighbor.

NATO was demanded by Russia to roll back its military presence in Eastern Europe, despite there being no plans for it to do so. There was no prospect of an expansion of the military alliance towards Russia at that time.

NATO officials said there was room for negotiation but they did not accept Russia's main demands.

The war has been going on for almost six months and there is no sign that it will end soon.

The invasion has caused other unforeseen consequences for Moscow. Germany has pledged to increase such purchasing in response to Russia.

The land border between Russia and NATO countries has doubled due to Sweden and Finland applying to join the alliance. Moscow condemned the expansion and threatened to retaliate, but didn't say what form it would take.

Despite its invasion of Ukraine, Russia has blamed the West for changing Europe's security architecture and on Tuesday, Putin said in his speech that "the so-called collective West is deliberately destroying the system of European security."

He said that the NATO bloc is moving east and is building up its military infrastructure.

He said that this is hypocritically declared to be a need to strengthen security in Europe. He said that the proposals put forward by Russia in December last year were ignored once again.

In an email Tuesday, Timothy Ash, a senior emerging markets strategist at BlueBay Asset Management, said there were multiple instances of Russia trying to undermine the European security system.

Russian intervention in the Syrian civil war was intended to create a wave of refugees into Europe. Left and right parties are supported by Putin. Europe is going to have energy shortages and social unrest because of Russia's restrictions. The West is trying to undermine European security.
