Tiger Woods is scheduled to meet with several of the top golfers in the world Tuesday in an effort to rally support for the tour.
There will be a meeting between Woods and the group of players at the BMW Championship in Delaware on Thursday.
Many of the top 20 players in the world, as well as a few other influential PGA Tour members who haven't defected to LIV Golf, will attend the meeting, according to a player who was invited to attend. The PGA Tour Players Advisory Committee meeting will take place soon after.
Sources say Jay Monahan is going to meet with members on Wednesday.
The meeting with Woods will take place a week after a federal judge denied a temporary restraining order for three players who had defected from the team.
The players who left the PGA Tour for the Saudi Arabian-backed LIV Golf circuit were criticized by Woods. The new circuit being fronted by Greg Norman is said to be worth between $100 million and $200 million and has several past major champions on board. The Telegraph of London reported last week that the world's second ranked golfer is joining LIV Golf.
Woods disagreed with it in July. I think that they have turned their back on the things that allowed them to get to this point.
Woods wondered if younger players who don't have exemptions into the majors could jeopardize their chances of playing in the majors.
The players of the LIV Golf series did not receive world ranking points from their first three events because they are not yet recognized by the official world golf ranking. LIV Golf is waiting for a ruling on its application. The Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open are the four major tournaments.
"Who knows what's going to happen in the near future with world-ranking points, the criteria for entering major championships?" The governing body is going to have to make a decision.
Some of these players may never play in a major championship. There is a chance. For sure, we don't know that. It's up to the major championship bodies to decide. Some players will never get a chance to play in a major championship and walk down the fairway at Augusta National. To me, that's not understandable.
In an interview that aired on Fox News earlier this month, Norman confirmed that Woods turned down an offer to join LIV Golf. The offer was made before Norman became the league's CEO.
He said that Woods is a PGA Tour ambassador like all the greats. The tour was great for him and his career.
