In what has become an uncommon year for alligator attacks, a woman was killed in South Carolina on Monday.
It was the fourth death from alligator attacks this year after a man was killed looking for Frisbees on May 31 in Florida, another man was killed near a retention pond in South Carolina, and an elderly woman was killed along a golf course in Florida.
People have had run ins with the creatures. A 43-year-old man was attacked by an alligator and treated for a serious injury in his arm on July 20 and a 34 year old man was bitten on his face while swimming in a Florida lake on August 4.
Residents of Florida have run-ins with alligators near their homes, roads, golf courses and other places.
Attacks are rare.
It's surprising that it doesn't happen more often because of how many people there are and how many alligators there are.

Alligators are found throughout the Southeast and wetlands, with their range stretching as far west as eastern Texas and as far east as coastal North Carolina.
Each state has a population of over one million alligators.
"Wherever there is standing water, an alligator can be found," the commission said.
The man thought the alligator was a dog. His leg was bitten by the alligator.
In Louisiana and Florida there are very few alligator attacks.
The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says licensed hunters remove over 1,000 nuisance alligators, which are any ones deemed a threat to pets, livestock or humans.
The commission said there were 442 unprovoked alligator bites in Florida from 1948 to 2021. There was one fatal injury per three years in the state.
Between 1948 and August 2004, there were 368 injuries and 15 deaths as a result of alligator encounters in the US, which means one death every three to four years. The need for a uniform reporting system among states was cited in the study.
There is a one in 3.1 million chance that a Florida resident will be seriously injured in an alligator attack. You have a better chance of being attacked by a bear in a national park.

If an alligator sees something smaller and weaker in the water, it may attack it. You assume some risk when you show up next to water. Don't try to make it happy.
Texas Parks and Wildlife says a safe distance from an alligator is at least 30 feet and that they can run up to 35 mph for a short period of time.
If an alligator is chasing you, experts from the University of Florida suggest running in a straight line. Experts say to punch and kick the alligator if it attacks. If you jam objects in the back of an alligator's mouth, it's possible to escape.
