The San Diego Padres star's reputation has been damaged because of his use of a steroid that was contained in a ringworm medication, according to his father.
Fernando Tatis Jr., who played in the major leagues over parts of 11 seasons, told "The Midday Show" in his native Dominican Republic that he used the medication TrofoBol to treat a ringworm. The spray that is used to treat scars and burns isn't sold in the US. A steroid and an antibiotic are listed on the label.
The Padres will advance to the playoffs if they get there, despite the fact that they won't have Tatis for the last 48 games of the regular season. The rest of the suspension will begin at the start of the next season. During the final stages of his recovery from a wrist injury, the discipline was handed down.
The two incidents, along with the 14-year, $340 million extension he signed in February 2021, raised serious concerns about the 23-year-old superstar's reliability and triggered strong comments from key members of the Padres.
While acknowledging that his son made a mistake in not realizing the medication contained a steroid, he added that the league could've done a better job of managing it.
He told "The Midday Show" in Spanish that there was no reason to destroy the image of a player.
The catastrophe that has taken place, not just for Jr., but for all of baseball, is what was said by the father. Baseball fans are going to stop watching the game. For something so insignificant that wasn't worth it is a total disappointment for Dominican fans. It is a current event. It's something that doesn't give you strength, first of all, doesn't amplify your weight-training regimen, that's second, doesn't have any testosterone, that's third, doesn't contain anything. It is a disaster for baseball.
Clostebol has been banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency due to it's resemblance to testosterone. Dee Gordon and Freddy Galvis have been suspended before for testing positive for the substance, which has been listed as a banned substance by MLB since the beginning of its drug-testing program in 2003
The first player in major league history with 80 home runs and 50 stolen bases within the first 300 games of his career, but he will have played in only 273 regular-season games by the end of the year. He missed the last seven weeks of the season because of a stress reaction in his lower back, and was out of the lineup for the rest of the season because of a left shoulder injury.
Factors that were seemingly within his control resulted in his yearlong absence. It comes at a bad time for the franchise, which stripped its farm system bare in order to acquire Juan Soto and has elevated its payroll to historic records while in pursuit of its first championship. He said he briefly considered appealing the suspension before deciding to serve it.
The father and son plan to explain their version of events to young ball players in the Dominican Republic.
The grace with which Fernando plays the game will never be taken away. There will never be a human who can take that away.
