A person familiar with the matter says Walmart has a deal with Paramount Global to offer its streaming service as a perk of its Walmart+ subscription service.
Two years ago, Walmart launched Walmart+ to drive sales. Free grocery delivery and gas discounts are included in the membership program.
The retail giant has refused to give details about how the service is doing or how many subscribers it has. According to estimates by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, its membership count seems to have stopped growing. Walmart+ has the same number of customers as in the April period.
One of the services that competes for eyeballs is Paramount+. It also includes shows such as "SpongeBob Squarepants." According to Paramount Global, Paramount+ has over 40 million subscribers. The company wants to have 100 million subscribers by the end of the century.
Paramount+ will get a new distribution channel and a brand boost from the deal with Walmart. A person who was not authorized to speak publicly about the deal said that Paramount+ was the only streaming service that had struck a deal with Walmart.
Walmart+ subscribers will have access to Paramount+'s "essential" tier, which costs $4.99 a month and includes commercials. There is a premium product for $9.99 per month.
Walmart wouldn't say anything. A request for comment was not responded to by Paramount. The Wall Street Journal was the first to report on the deal.
Walmart's second-quarter earnings will be reported on Tuesday.
