Rudy Giuliani has been named a target in the criminal investigation into efforts by former President Donald Trump and his allies to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, according to lawyers for Giuliani.

A leading figure in various attempts to challenge the former president's electoral loss, Giuliani was Trump's personal attorney. He was a leader of the pro-Trump legal team that filed many failed lawsuits to block or overturn election results. He was outside of court pushing false election conspiracy theories.

He has become a central character in the investigation. The New York Times reported that prosecutors questioned witnesses about Giuliani's December 2020 appearance before Georgia lawmakers, where he spread various claims of election fraud.

Giuliani is scheduled to testify before the grand jury in Atlanta on Monday.

According to the Times, Giuliani is a target in the investigation. In an email to CNBC, Robert Costello, an attorney for Giuliani, said that another member of Giuliani's legal team, Bill Thomas, had received that news.

If Giuliani is asked about his dealings with Trump, he will probably invoke executive privilege.

A federal judge denied Lindsey Graham's request to throw out a subpoena for his testimony. Graham has been subpoenaed to testify before the grand jury.
