Brittney Griner Appealing Drug Conviction In Russia

A day after she was sentenced to 9 years in a Russian prison for her drug conviction, she filed an appeal in the foreign country.

The filing was confirmed to CNN by a lawyer. The grounds of the appeal are not known at this time.

It was expected that the move would happen after the conviction and sentencing of Griner. She admitted to having a small amount of the drug in her luggage at the Moscow airport, but she said she didn't mean to break the law.

Despite the appeal process, the U.S. is still trying to get a prisoner swap deal with Russia.

Biden called on Russia to release her so she could be with her family.

As soon as possible, my administration will continue to work hard and try to bring them home.

The man has been in Russia for over a month.
