According to a new study, astronauts who went on a crewed mission to the Red Planet would likely face devastating levels of radiation.
The scientists used a 1,000-day crewed mission on another planet to figure out how much radiation the astronauts would be exposed to.
The work was partly inspired by the gender gap in space radiation research. NASA is only sending test dummies with female anatomies into space for the first time this year because most studies focus on male bodies.
The virtual models of both male and female anatomies were going to be included in the study. These models were subjected to a lot of radiation, including that caused by solar flares. The model accounted for exposure with aluminum shielding and without.
The results were that the missions would be unsafe.
After surveying the impact of the 1,000-day simulation on over 40 of the digitally-modeled body parts and organs, the researchers found that most of the individual organs contained radiation levels over one sievert.
None of the data is certain as the study is still being reviewed. Before any astronauts can make their way to Earth, they have to figure out how to get to it.
