The Chinese military has organized a combat readiness patrol and exercises around Taiwan, according to an official statement.

The purpose of the drill is to deter the U.S. and Taiwan from destabilizing the region.

China's defense ministry angrily reacted to the U.S. delegation's visit, saying it violated China's sovereignty and the one-China principle.

Less than a week after China ended its largest military drill around the islands, there are new drills taking place.

According to the American Institute in Taiwan, the bipartisan delegation met with the president of Taiwan on Monday.

The one-China principle is doomed to failure according to a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman. During their visit, the delegation noted discussions on U.S.-Taiwan relations, regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains, climate change, and other significant issues.

Key Background

This is the second major visit by U.S. lawmakers to Taiwan this month. The delegation includes Rep. John Garamendi (D-Calif.), Alan Lowenthal (D-Calif.), Don Beyer (D- Va.), and Aumua Amata Coleman radewagen. Nancy Pelosi was the most high profile U.S. official to visit Taiwan in 25 years. Beijing ordered its military to conduct its biggest-ever military exercises around the self-ruled island it considers to be part of its territory. China launched missiles across the Taiwan Strait as part of the drills. The Chinese military plans to conduct regular patrols near the island after the exercises ended three days later than expected.

Beijing updated its Taiwan policy last week, reversing an earlier promise not to send troops to the island after reunification. The so-called "one country, two systems" offer was part of previous reunification proposals by Beijing. The President of China, who stands on the verge of an unprecedented third term, has appeared to be less willing to allow any autonomy to China's special administrative regions.
