There are concerns and controversy surrounding the Full Self- Driving software.

There is a well-known booster attempting to show the capabilities of the software by asking for people to volunteer their children run in front of the vehicle. The account can be hard to pin down as some of the statements are bold and others are serious.

I don't have much to say about this since anyone who follows the most basic tenets of society knows it is wrong and ridiculous. Maybe it's time for us all to put our grown-up pants on and stop acting like kids.

There is an important departure over at the Department of transportation. The head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration plans to step down in September. Ann Carlson will take over. The California Air Resources Board is whereCliff is going.

The White House needs to fill the spot quickly. What's the reason? It has not been used in a long time.

Micromobbin’

the station scooter1a

The shared micromobility state of the industry report was released by the North American bikeshare and scooter association.

The number of vehicles in operation is higher than it was before the Pandemic, which is a positive sign. People are still not riding at pre-pandemic levels despite the fact that 128 million trips were taken in 2021.

Other findings from the report include: • Electric-assist e-bikes thrived in 2021, with the number of trips increasing from 9.9 million to 18.8 million. • Trips on e-scooters accounted for 49% of total trips taken on shared micromobility. • About 37% of shared micromobility trips replaced a car trip, which has helped to offset 54 million pounds of CO2 emissions.

• 63% of riders said they used micromobility to connect to public transit

Scooting right along (plus ebikes)

It would look like the Niu SQi prototype if Rick Deckard rode an e- bike.

The e-bike was created by Prodrive and Hummingbird.

According to a report by McKinsey, investors have dumped $8.4 billion into shared micro mobility companies. Europe has more dense cities than the U.S., so it may be worth watching the investment in European micro mobility businesses.

Tier's sixth generation e-scooter features nicer turn signals and better suspension.

In the first half of the year, cycling rates have increased by 45%.

The federal government does not have an e-bike incentive program. The state has $100,000 in funding to give residents up to $250 for a standard rebate and $400 for an enhanced one. The price of the e-bike will affect the amount. If you live there, act quickly.

Bike shops are having a hard time getting rid of their stock. There was a time when you could buy a bike anywhere.

Deal of the week

money the station

This week, we are focused on a deal.

When Boston Dynamics was acquired by Hyundai at the end of 2020, there were many open questions, including why we should assume this acquisition would be any different than the previous ones.

It's been a mixed bag. There was some movement this past week that signaled the direction of the company.

The Boston Dynamics Artificial Intelligence Institute will be funded by a $400 million investment from the car company. At the end of the year, Boston Dynamics founder and COO Rob Playter took the reins of the institute, which will be based in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Other deals that caught my eye.

The vehicle subscription startup founded by Scott Painter has ordered over 20,000 electric vehicles. The company said it will use its partnership with AutoNation for vehicle preparation, delivery services and subscriber activation.

Shift Technologies, the online used-vehicle retailer, agreed to merge in a stock-for-stock deal.

The Series C was closed by a South Korean company. Strategic investors in the round include Aptiv and ZF.

The Urban Innovation Fund got commitments of $101 million for its Fund III and $20 million for the Opportunity Fund.

The company closed a round of funding. Mirae Asset Capital is one of the investors.

Earnings

Arrival, the U.K.-based commercial EV startup turned publicly traded company, slashed its delivery plans from 400 vehicles to 20 as it put development of its battery-electric buses on hold. The company reported widening losses for the second quarter and no longer expects to make money in the foreseeable future.

A total of $11.5 million in revenue was brought in from the direct sales of its EV charging stations, charging service revenues, network fees and ride sharing service revenues. It was an increase of 164%. The company had a net loss of $22.6 million in the second quarter, compared to $13.5 million a year ago.

Canoo shows a company that is burning through cash. The EV startup-gone-SPAC was able to get enough capital to last through the rest of the year.

Rivian still wants to deliver 25,000 electric vehicles by the end of the year, but it now expects to burn an additional $700 million. The company told investors in its second-quarter earnings report that it expects to lose over $5 billion in the next four years, up from the $4.75 billion estimate it gave three months ago.

The company had a net operating loss for the second quarter. The cash will help the company meet its opex and capex for the next year as it continues to build its prototype.

In the second quarter, Wallbox had a record revenue of 39.5 million. A leading EV charging installer in the U.S. and a provider of circuit boards were acquired by the EV charging company.

Electric vehicles

Tim de Chant writes that BMW seems poised to make the same mistakes as before.

Making cars is the toughest challenge for electric vehicle startups.

FedEx has a same day delivery service.

Ultra-fast public charging stations and delivery fleet EV charging will be available at more than 25 IKEA retail locations.

The dune buggy has been reinvented as an EV.

Musk jokingly asked his fans where the company should build, and when a few yelled out "Canada", he may have been more serious about locating a factory in Canada. Musk said that he was half Canadian. Perhaps I should. The company is talking to Canadian officials.

Musk sold 7.9 million shares of the company as he prepared for his court battle with the social networking site.

In-car tech

All Buick and GMC buyers are now required to pay a fee for a subscription service that was optional in the past.

The new operating system for Mercedes-Benz will be powered by Unity. The first vehicles to run MB.OS were on the road.

One of the most dangerous and irresponsible actions by a car company in decades was called out by a political and consumer advocate. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has the power to order the removal of technology from cars. That is about 100,000 vehicles according to CEO Musk.

The Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. District of Appeals disagreed about the reallocation of part of the 5.9 GHz band.

Inflation Reduction Act

The analysis is pouring in after the House passed it.

The Zero Emission Transportation Association pushed the job creation opportunities with the act's passage, stating "we are one step closer to creating millions of good paying American jobs, lowering consumer energy and transportation costs, and protecting tens of millions of Americans against dangerous emissions and unhealthy air caused by tailpipe pollution"

An analysis was written by Tim de Chant about the energy and climate pieces.

There was a chance that the act would include a $900 tax credit on the purchase of a new electric bike, but sadly that was left out of the bill. The bill added tax credits for electric cars. We like our cars in America. Electric cars alone are not enough to lower emissions in the U.S.

Miscellaneous

BMW and Toyota will work together to make hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in the next decade.
