A congressional delegation landed in Taiwan early Sunday morning to meet with Taiwanese leaders and discuss U.S.-Taiwan relations, just weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi controversially visited the island.
The senators and congressmen are going to visit American Samoa.
The delegation will discuss a number of issues, including regional security, trade and investment, global supply chains, climate change and other issues.
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared a photo of Alexander Yui greeting Markey upon his arrival and thanked the "like minded U.S. lawmakers for the timely visit and steadfast support."
According to Taiwan's Defence Ministry, 11 Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan's air defense zone on Sunday as Beijing continued military drills near the island.
China is sending fighter jets and bombers to Thailand for a military exercise on Sunday, while the U.S. is taking part in combat drills in Indonesia along with Australia, Japan and Singapore.
On the heels of Pelosi's trip to Taiwan, which drew backlash from China, and imposed sanctions on the speaker and her immediate family, the visit is coming. Ahead of Pelosi's arrival in Taiwan, the Chinese military conducted large-scale military drills near the island. The U.S. does not support Taiwanese independence according to a phone call President Joe Biden had with China's President. He said he was against Beijing changing the status quo. The U.S. has had differing opinions on Taiwan. As a result of Pelosi's flight landing in Taiwan, as many as seven hundred thousand people follow along online.
Pelosi says the U.S. is determined to preserve democracy.
